Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a twofold process; onsite optimization and offsite optimization.
Onsite optimization is the changes or additions to your website that screams to Google what you do and what you want to be ranked for. Offsite optimization is the work that takes place behind the scenes; the unseen hero who is saving the day.
Let’s get into these two and see how you’re doing…
Onsite Optimization
Accounts for roughly 20% of SEO
Think about this; have you ever had a conversation with a friend and had a hard time following what they were saying because they were general in their conversation and story? Well, this is something to consider and something that most website owners FAIL to do; what conversation is your website having with Google, Bing, Yahoo and other search engines? Is your websites conversation exact, precise, clear and specific or is it generalized, nonchalant, basic or all together detached from the message that you really want to be understood?
Here are some questions you should ask yourself:
- When was the last time you looked at your sites title, description and keywords?
- How long has it been since you added new, relevant, keyword rich content?
- What keywords and keyword phrases are you trying to target and what is their frequency, density and proximity on your site?
- Are your images optimized?
- Have you created a site map?
Offsite Optimization
Accounts for roughly 80% of SEO
You know the guy in school who was friends with all the jocks, yet he wasn’t a jock? Or what about the girl in school who dated all the jocks and made all the other girls jealous? It was just this massive popularity contest with no way out. Either you joined them or got left behind. If you hated that scene, then I have some bad news. Google loves popularity contests and they always favor the most popular.
How does Google determine who is popular and who is not? Well it’s simple in theory but not always simple in application. It all comes down to this, how many other relevant websites, with a high page rank, are linking to your website?
What are some strategies in getting other websites linking to your website?
Here are a few:
- Link Building
- Directory Submissions
- Search Engine Submission
- Press Releases
- Article Marketing
And that is basically it!
