Young Entrepreneurs use Tech to Compensate

Click here to discover how 2 guys figured out how to market any business on the Internet while also putting 15K into their pockets in 90 Days!

This piece originally ran on FastCompany.com, December 22, 2010.

Humorist P.J. O’Rourke titled his 1995 memoir Age and Guile Beat Youth, Innocence and a Bad Haircut. He was writing about his journey from hippie to conservative, but the phrase applies just as well to the differences between younger and older entrepreneurs, according to a recent article by Annie Lowery on Slate.

In the piece, Lowery quotes research by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, showing that the cohort of entrepreneurs under 35 may have created more new businesses in 2009, but accounted for only 19.1% of “total entrepreneurial activity.” Additional studies by the entrepreneurship-focused Kaufmann Foundation found that the average age of entrepreneurs was 39, with far more successful businesses launched by Americans over 50.

It stands to reason that experience would be helpful in something as complex as starting a new company. So are other factors that often correlate with age, such as a longer credit history, a thicker rolodex of potential investors, partners and customers, the aura of mature authority, and deeper knowledge of a particular market or industry.

Part of the appeal of the notion of “young entrepreneurship” is that it is counterintuitive. It flies in the face of the very sensible idea that, in business, experience and seniority are key. Young people stereotypically offset the advantages of maturity with greater energy, fewer encumbrances in their personal lives, a streak of unjaded idealism, and, frankly, a willingness to take risks that more seasoned people might consider foolish. When you’re making a big bet on entrepreneurship, it’s sometimes helpful to have less to lose.

One reason there is so much focus on young entrepreneurs is because they tend to succeed most spectacularly in highly-visible industries such as IT, media and entertainment. It may be comparatively more difficult for a 25 year-old to open an auto dealership or a cold storage warehouse, but it’s a much smaller leap to launch a videogame studio or social media marketing agency. In addition to perhaps having more familiarity and up-to-date skills in these areas, young people are also adept at using technology to close some of the entrepreneurial age gaps. For example:

Social networks automate relationship-building: Online networks make it practically effortless to find and connect with people who might prove to be useful business contacts. In addition to general networks like Facebook, there are now increasing online resources and communities purpose-built for young entrepreneurs. This partially offsets the advantages of a thick rolodex built up over years.

Data supplants wisdom: Insights that were previously limited to those with keen intuition or deep experience are now broadly available to anyone who knows what questions to ask. Not only is more business knowledge accessible online than ever before, but savvy entrepreneurs can mine online sites and communities for market intelligence and customer data.

The economics of attention have changed: Innovative businesses need attention from customers, investors and the market to break through. In the past, industry veterans with long experience could count on insider connections to give them an edge. Now great ideas can go viral and global in an instant, and formal structures such as innovation contests are becoming popular ways of exposing and validating new talent.

Capital requirements for knowledge-based businesses are lower. It still takes credit to start most traditional businesses, but in certain kinds of knowledge and service industries, the only capital a startup entrepreneur needs is between his or her ears. That creates a more level playing field for those with short credit histories, and who may lack tangible assets like property or retirement accounts to leverage into the new business.

These tools exist for young and old alike. There’s no reason a 70 year-old entrepreneur couldn’t make just as extensive use of LinkedIn and online analytics as anyone else. However, they all serve to mitigate the traditional advantages of experience, and dramatically reduce the barriers to entry in the highest-impact segments of the economy.

Midcareer professionals who leave established companies to found new ventures in their fields of expertise will still enjoy considerably better odds of success than someone just starting out, and retirees with a lifetime of accumulated savings will still be able to put more resources into a company to give it time to find its feet. A diversified economy needs those kinds of businesses and should celebrate their success.

At the same time, we’ve seen significant changes in the past decade that make it a lot easier for young people to make a serious run as entrepreneurs much earlier in their lives. The kinds of businesses founded by young entrepreneurs make a much bigger impact when they succeed, and leave a much lighter mark when they fail.

Facebook Fan Page Layout – Is the Change Necessary?

Click here to discover how 2 guys figured out how to market any business on the Internet while also putting 15K into their pockets in 90 Days!

I have a question!

Are the changes that Facebook is making to Fan Pages necessary or just another wrench to be thrown in the ever changing world of Facebook?

If you have been on Facebook for any amount of time; let’s just say within the last two years, you’ve seen some changes and additions to layout, functionality, apps, texting, messaging, places, etc.; some good, some not so good.  In my opinion it’s as if changes are made just as the Facebook community is getting comfortable with the new layout and feel from the LAST time they changed it.  Honestly, what gives?

Some of you may or may have not yet noticed changes that Facebook is making to their Fan Pages.  I manage a few Fan Pages for clients.  At this time the change has only been implemented on one of the Fan Pages that I manage.  This is for the Utah Advocates and you can see the change on their fan page at http://www.facebook.com/TheUtahAdvocates.

Two other pages that I also manage are for Lifted Life Yoga and Hidden Hills Cabins.  To see the difference take a look at their Facebook Fan Pagesathttp://www.facebook.com/LiftedLifeYoga and http://www.facebook.com/BrokenBowHiddenHillsCabins.

Make sure to click “Like” on the Fan Pages.

From the looks of things this looks to be a progressive move from Facebook.  Very similar to the changes they made on personal profile pages.  Change a few here and a few there until they are all changed.  One of the major concerns that I have with the new layout is the ability to select a landing page with your FBML.  We have known for some time that Facebook has been working towards iFrames and away from FBML.  I wrote an article about Facebook changing to iFrames.  But at least let us choose the landing tab for new comers.  That feature has apparently been taken away.

Please comment below and help shed some light on these changes; if anything shorten my learning curve.

Look at the image below to see how the Managed Permissions with your Facebook Fan Page editor looked before and now what they are looking like.  The “Default Landing Tab” has been removed.

Be Still and Know...

What I am about to say may not have a lot to do with entrepreneurship…or maybe it does.

Julie Branham of Lifted Life Yoga

Do you suffer from the same condition as I? Just getting your brain to slow down can be draining, taxing or exhausting. You have so many ideas and things that “have” to get done and you wonder where the time in the day went when it’s only 2-o’clock.

I can’t tell you how many times I have told myself that I need to get into meditation. Maybe just start with 1 minute a day and then work my way up from there. I go to the gym at least 5 days a week; which if I didn’t I would be wound so tight my strings would snap…literally. I think that I have the physical thing down pretty well but what about the mental or emotional? How balanced can you be if only one area is getting most or all the attention? The questions that I have asked are just some questions that I ask myself.

Today I found some relief.

I have some friends in Alpine UT., Julie Branham and Linda Black, who own Lifted Life Yoga. If you have not checked them out, do yourself a favor and do it. They recently came out with a short picture video, put it to music, which calms my soul.

Take a look, comment and share. Be your best. Namaste

SEO Vs PPC Versus Social Media Marketing - Which Method Do I Pick?

Click here to discover how 2 guys figured out how to market any business on the Internet while also putting 15K into their pockets in 90 Days!

It is a real challenge for any company competing on the net. Google has over a billion websites listed alone! All these websites are potential competitors. So how can your website stand out from the rest? A knowledgeable SEO company will be able to assist with SEO services but how about the other methods?

Recently, the way business operates has completely changed. Going back just a bit, the Internet wasn’t where people bought their products and services. Many would go down the high street and choose from the many shops open. The Internet has changed people’s buying habits for ever. While the high streets are still open for the shopper that can’t wait for next day delivery, traditional methods of shopping aren’t utilised as much as they once were. For those businesses wanting to find customers and get their name out there, there are three main methods- using an SEO company, a social media agency, or using pay per click.

Internet marketers tend to pick and specialise in one of the three. There are internet marketing companies that specialise in all three, but they are few and far between. So what exactly is each marketing method, and what are their advantages and disadvantages.

The holy grail of the Internet marketer is search engine optimization. When you type a keyphrase into Google, you are offered two different sets of results. Sometimes at the top, but mostly at the right, are paid adverts, which we’ll move onto in a bit. Organic results appear in the middle. These listings are unpaid and are in a nutshell, what Google deems worthy of being up there! Imagine if you could appear at the top of these results? Even better, imagine being able to appear in the top three. This is where an SEO company comes in. There are a number of different methods to SEO. First you have onsite optimisation which involves getting the title tags and body content just right, amongst other tweaks you can make. Secondly a good SEO company will be very good at link building. Link building involves sending backlinks to your website from others. It is in a nutshell, when website X links to you. So what are the disadvantages? It is hard to find fault, as if you find the right SEO company, you can reap the rewards. You could perhaps point out that Google can be unpredictable. A method that you have been using successfully can suddenly stop working. However a good SEO company will always be up to date with the latest and best methods.

If you don’t have the patience for SEO, then Pay Per Click advertising is worth considering. Pay per click allows you to bid to appear on the right hand side of the results. To an extent, you can therefore choose where you appear. So your title and body text can sell your product and entice the user to click through. This is something you don’t have so much control over with organic results, as Google chooses what is displayed. Pay per click brings instant results- you can be advertising in minutes. Search engine optimisation takes months to get top rankings, and even then you have no guarantees. Pay per click allows you to pay your way to the top right away. On the other hand a good Adwords management company will be able to optimise your campaign to get your money’s worth. However Adwords really is for the big boys and you can end up bidding for more than the product is worth if you aren’t careful. A competent SEO company can be hired for a lot less.

Unless you have been living in an air raid bunker for the last few years, you must have encountered social media! Who doesn’t have an account with the two main social networking sites- Facebook and Twitter? Who has been amazed to find their grandparents adding them on Facebook? More and more companies are using social media to reach their customers. Social media is a very different form of advertising, as it is much more subtle. The worse thing to do with social media, is to contantly pump out promotions and offers. Social media is all about creating fans, who in turn ‘tweet’ about or ‘like’ your company and tell their friends. It’s important to be patient with social media as its more a long term effort than short term gain.

Do the Mormons (LDS Church) Know SEO?

Click here to discover how 2 guys figured out how to market any business on the Internet while also putting 15K into their pockets in 90 Days!

Do the Mormons Know SEO?

According to Avinesh Kaushik, Analytics Evangelist for Google, the Mormons do know Search Engine Optimization otherwise known as SEO. In fact, they know it so well that Avinesh recommends looking at their strategies and following their lead.

At the Chicago 2010 SES Conference Expo Avinesh, who was the keynote speaker, was interviewed by Byron Gordon who asked Avinesh to explain why the Mormons know SEO. During his speech Avinesh used the Mormons website, www.lds.org, as an illustration on proper SEO strategies and techniques. Avinesh said “They [The Mormons or LDS church] have done a marvelous job, as you reflect on their tag cloud, of doing great SEO.” Later in the interview he said “We could learn from the SEO work the LDS church has done”.

What do Mormons and SEO have in common?

Avinesh decided to use the LDS website as an example after typing in a Google search for the keyword “church” and having the Mormon website show as the first church. The LDS official website is also ranked #1 for keywords “church Jesus” and “Jesus Christ church”. Surprisingly, they even rank before Wikipedia for these two search terms.

Adding an Avatar with Gravatar

People tend to forget how important it is to add a face, personality and means of connection to their blog comments and posts.  Either they don’t know how or their too lazy to take 5 minutes to professionalize their image.  If you are going to take the time to comment on blogs then you need to take the time to add a face to those comments. If you want to see exactly how to do this then just go to the bottom of this post and watch the video.

With Gravatar, adding an Avatar has never been easier.

It is so basic and yet I am surprised at how many fail to use it.

An Avatar is a way for people to connect with you and see “the face” behind the comment.

Let’s take a look at an example of comments with and without a face.

Are you able to see the difference?

One more thing; add a way for people to connect with you when you comment.  In most comment sections on blogs it will give you an option to enter your website.  If you don’t have a website then at least include your Facebook or Twitter URL.

3 Pros of the WordPress Highlighter Plugin

I came across a cool little WordPress plugin, which is still in beta, that allows the visitor to highlight, comment and share any portion of a post to Facebook and Twitter.

You can see the tab hanging out of the left side of the screen that gives a brief explanation.  If you scroll down this post, or any other post, a drop down will appear at the top.

Here are the Pros:

  1. You can highlight and comment on any portion of the post.  This is great when you have a specific question or comment about a specific phrase within the post.  The comments then show in the comment section.  The same is also true for any images within the post.
  2. You can share the highlighted section on the two largest social media forums Facebook and Twitter.
  3. You can email the highlighted section.

Below is an example of the Highlighter WordPress plugin in action.  The same is also true for images.  Go ahead and give it a try and share your feedback.  Do you or do you not like it?  Should it stay or should it go?

Adding iFrames to your WordPress Website and Why You Should

Click here to discover how 2 guys figured out how to market any business on the Internet while also putting 15K into their pockets in 90 Days!

We are all trying to get the readers to stay on our site for as long as we can.  Let’s be honest, we don’t want to bore them.  Well what if there was a way to add additional content to your WordPress site that keeps the ready both interested and interacted?

Well, fortunately there is and it’s a little snippet of code called iFrames.  You are probably expecting some long drawn out piece of code that takes a college professor to translate; you’re wrong.

In fact here’s the code:

<iframe src=”http://www.yoursite.com/“width=”400” height=”300” marginwidth=”0″ marginheight=”0″hspace=”0″ vspace=”0″ frameborder=”0″ scrolling=yes></iframe>

That’s it.  Well, not exactly.  You might be wondering what it means, how to install it, and “show me an example please”.

  1. The first thing that you want to do is go into your WordPress website dashboard and open a new post or a new page.  I recommend page so that you can display them in your primary or secondary navigation header.  Or as a widget on your side bar.
  2. Once you have a new page opened you want to make sure you are in the HTML tab.
  3. Insert the site into the iFrames code that you want to display in your WordPress website, adjust the height and width of the fame to your site and hit publish.  You now have another site streaming into yours.

Can you see how powerful this is? You are able to stream other relevant sites into your WordPress site adding additional content and resources for your readers.

Here are some examples of site that you can stream in for your particular niche:

Oh ya, one more thing.  I did promise some examples.  But before I give the examples I want to remind you to comment and share ;) .  Here you go:
